Know the Requirement

Michigan CPL Renewal Requirements

Michigan renewal applicants certify that they completed at least three hours of review and one hour of firing-range time. You must complete both within the six months immediately before applying.

Prime Defense provides the three-hour review, while you complete the range hour separately. Michigan generally allows you to apply up to six months before expiration and up to one year after expiration. However, if your prior CPL expired more than one year ago, Michigan no longer treats the application as a renewal.

Before you apply, review the current Michigan State Police CPL renewal information.

3 Hours of Review

Renewal applicants certify at least three hours of review of the required training.

1 Hour of Range Time

At least one hour of firing-range time is also required and is completed separately.

Within the Previous 6 Months

The review and range time must be completed in the six months immediately before the renewal application.

Optional, Structured Review

Why Take a Michigan CPL Refresher Class?

Michigan does not require a paid CPL renewal class. You may complete the required review on your own. However, many CPL holders prefer an instructor-led CPL refresher class to revisit firearm safety, Michigan self-defense law and responsible concealed carry in an organized three-hour session.

Prime Defense offers scheduled online and in-person classes with opportunities to ask instructors questions. Review the calendar for the format available on each date.
