Complete One-Day Course
Port Huron CPL Class Details
Michigan law requires applicants to complete an appropriate pistol safety training course before applying for a Concealed Pistol License. Prime Defense's one-day Michigan CPL class includes five hours of classroom instruction and three hours of live-fire range instruction.
Classroom Training
Learn firearm safety, responsible carry, situational awareness, conflict avoidance and Michigan self-defense law in a professional classroom environment.
Live-Fire Instruction
Complete the required range instruction with hands-on coaching from multiple instructors at an offsite indoor range near the end of class.
Certificate of Completion
After successfully completing both portions, you will receive the certificate needed to apply for your Michigan CPL through your county clerk.
Class begins at 8:00 AM sharp. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early. The course normally concludes at approximately 5:00 PM. Students should plan for the full day.

What Students Should Bring

- Transportation to the offsite range
No firearms or ammunition are permitted inside the classroom. If you plan to use your own firearm during the live-fire portion, it must remain unloaded and secured inside your vehicle until you arrive at the range. The range requires students to purchase the ammunition used during class onsite.

How Port Huron Residents Apply for a Michigan CPL
Michigan residents must apply for their CPL through the county where they live. Port Huron residents apply through the St. Clair County Clerk.

You will receive your signed certificate of completion after successfully completing the classroom and live-fire requirements.

St. Clair County offers an online application submission option, but an application is not considered received until the applicant appears in person.

Bring the required identification, training certificate, application and other materials required by the county.
Complete Fingerprinting
New applicants must complete fingerprinting within 45 days after appearing at the Clerk's Office. The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office provides fingerprinting services, or applicants may use another authorized law-enforcement LiveScan provider of their choice. Contact the selected location in advance to confirm its hours and whether an appointment is required.

No. Prime Defense has loaner firearms available at no additional charge.
Can I use my own firearm?
Yes. Your firearm must remain unloaded and secured inside your vehicle during the classroom portion. Firearms and ammunition are not permitted in the classroom.
Is live-fire training included?
Yes. Live-fire range instruction, the range fee and target fee are included. Students must purchase one box of ammunition at the range.
Applications, Policies and Renewals
How old must I be to obtain a Michigan CPL?
Michigan applicants must generally be at least 21 years old to apply for a CPL. Students may complete the training course at age 18, but they cannot apply for the license until they meet Michigan's age requirement.
Will I receive my CPL during class?
No. You will receive a certificate confirming that you successfully completed the required training. You then use that certificate when applying through the county clerk where you reside.
Where do Port Huron residents apply?
Port Huron residents apply through the St. Clair County Clerk because Michigan requires applicants to apply in their county of residence.
What is the cancellation and rescheduling policy?
Class registrations are nonrefundable. One reschedule is permitted when proper notice is provided. Rescheduling requests made within 48 hours of class are subject to a $40 fee. No-call/no-show registrations forfeit the class tuition.
Do I need the full class if I am renewing my CPL?
If you already have a Michigan CPL and are eligible to renew, you may not need the full eight-hour course. Prime Defense offers a live, instructor-led Michigan CPL renewal class through Zoom.
